The Space Shuttle Columbia Tragedy
Today once again our hearts beat wounded with grief. As intelligent human beings we know that we can not control certain aspects of life. Yet it is still hard to understand the lack of control, the hopelessness and the helplessness of an event of this magnitude.
Tomorrow most of us will rise and shine to start our day. We will remember. We will listen to the news. We will go on with our life. For the families of the Space Shuttle Columbia, their day isn’t a day instead it is suspended numbness. They will be trying to cope with the changing puzzle their life has now become. For those loved ones and friends they will be faced with excepting the reality of their loss and experiencing their pain.
Physicists talk about the “butterfly effect”. It is said that if a butterfly flaps its wings in the Amazon jungle it will eventually change the weather in Sydney, Australia. They say that one butterfly flapping its wings changes atmospheric pressure and hence the ripple effect will actually change the weather around the world. What they don’t know is when the butterfly will flap its wings. They don’t know how far off the ground it will be, they don’t know if another butterfly will flap at the same time or if many butterflies will flap. Each variable will change the effect. Grief is like the “butterfly effect”. Grief is very unique to each individual because of the different factors that are unique to you. Grief puts us in a fragile state. This fragile state combined with each person’s unique grief requires great patience and sensitivity for each other.
When we struggle to get through a tragedy that touches us to our core hopefully it will lead us to find higher and deeper engagement in life which will open us up to our deepest possibilities. May we have the insight and the compassion to reach out to each other and behold the tenderness of life.
